Take all necessary safety precautions when transporting a person who uses a mobility aid, whether you’re a caregiver for the differently abled at a health center, in a home healthcare environment, or for a family member or friend.

AUTOMOBILES

Be sure to specify that the vehicle is equipped with a mobility aid.

  • Maintain the vehicle and have it evaluated regularly
  • Check that the lift is working properly
    • The system safety and security entry on the lift releases instantly as well as pulls the lever back when it is running
    • Audio alerts for lifts
    • If required, guidebook backup system is available for lift features.
DEVICES

Examine frequently the involved tools

  • Mobility device tie downs are excellent and also in great condition.
  • Check the brakes on mobility devices
  • Check that the belt has all of its proper features
  • Check the power controls of powered chairs and make sure they cannot be accidentally altered while in the vehicle.
TRAINING

If you are a family member or paid caregiver, make sure to look for training that covers:

  • Loading and discharge procedures that are safe
  • Secure the chair correctly
  • Surveillance cyclists in a lorry
LOADING

Look for problems during the entire packing process:

  • Ensure adequate packing space (back or sides)
  • Avoid areas with irregular surfaces and high web traffic.
  • Before lowering the lift, engage brake
  • Reduce the lift to the Ground
  • Ensure the mobility device safety belt and security belt are securely fastened
  • Place the mobility device on the lift system according to the manufacturer’s instructions
  • The mobility device should be turned off and the brakes released.
  • Use the security and safety band system constantly
  • Lift device on
  • To avoid a system roll-off, ensure the safety and security of the entrance.
  • When the lift has been raised all the way to the floor of the vehicle, assist the person into the correct position in the car.
  • According to the manufacturer’s recommendations, lock both security and safety band systems into the floor systems in spite of the front wheels.
  • According to the manufacturer’s recommendations, lock both back bands into the security device of the vehicle between the back mobility device wheels.
  • Attach safety bands to the framework only of the mobility tool as per the manufacturer’s instructions; the majority of mobility devices have transport hooks built into their framework.
  • Use the shoulder band. The mobility device seatbelt does not protect anyone in a car crash
UNLOADING

Remember these things when you discharge:

  • Ensure that the area is far enough from web traffic to allow for adequate discharge.
  • Release the lift
  • Remove the shoulder strap and tie-downs on mobility device
  • Help the person onto the lift system
  • Make sure the mobility device is facing out for a side loading lorry.
  • Make sure the mobility device has been turned off and the brakes have been applied.
  • Ensure that you are using the system security and safety entrance
  • Secure the lift safety and Security Band
  • From outside the van, reduce the lift to the ground completely.
  • The mobility device must be removed very carefully from the lift system
  • Before returning to the vehicle, ensure that the person is safe.

It’s easy to overlook a safety tip when it comes to mobility devices in a fast-paced world. You can reduce the risk of injury and also maintain everyone much safer with perseverance as you train.
